GLASGOW UNIVERSITY (25/07/98)
Damn shame that Glasgow has not played host to the real thing for well over a decade. This is due, I'm told, to Eldritch's dislike of being spat on. It's unfortunate that Eldritch feels this way since, I believe, it was Hussey who was always the target. Nevertheless, we got the Murphy boys at Glasgow's Queen Margaret Union on Saturday night, the very same stage the other Sisters once graced, and the reception was ecstatic. No spitting, no aggro, just a totally wired atmosphere from start to finish and everyone losing themselves in the music. The renditions were, by all accounts, authentic and blistering. The axemens' playing was strikingly accurate, and in the cases of TOL, FALAA and Logic, truer to the original recorded versions than the current Sisters line-up manages. It was also nice to hear live versions of songs the Sisters have never played. 'When you don't see me' was great, and the stonking, shuddering version of 'Colours', which seemed to have more drums than the original, was one of the evening's highlights. As for the Elvis himself, his vocals sound more like Von circa 85 than the snarling, scowler of late. He did occasionally sing slightly out of step, but this was more than made up for by numerous bastardisations of the lyrics (e.g. 'to let somebody fuck you' in 'More' and 'my balls felt just like two balloons' in CN.). For the first half of the gig, he went for the Sandeman Port bottle man look of 85, but when 'More' came on, this was swapped for something more akin to the look of the video. The cloak was gone, the leathers were on, and The King was wired. The hat came off for a smarting 'Vision Thing' (as for what happened to Elvis's hat, well, um, read on.) and after a long break, the encore commenced with one of the show's other highlights, a stunning 'Comfortably Numb/SKOS', upon which crowd erupted. The atmosphere during the whole gig was one of total celebration. All in all, great fun and a real treat. Setlist:

P. S. A personal message to Andrew Elvis - if you want your hat back,
I'll post it on, but would love to keep it as a trophy and souvenir of
a brilliant show.
