The Courthouse, Huddersfield (15.07.99)

OK, so the Sisters did warm up last night in Huddersfield. It may have been the Sisters of Murphy, but with all the windows shut and a good crowd nobody would deny the heat generated upstairs at the Courthouse. A good set again for their 2nd anniversary gig, the major change probably being the awesome amount of dry ice generated by the three smoke machines! And it was nice to hear an Abba song done properly again, but I was disappointed at no Iggy look-alike-duet for 1969. That would have been a scream!

Certainly got me in the mood for a trip to Portugal. Shame I'm not going to make it.

The boy's took to the stage at 2130hrs amid a sumptuous nimbus of smoke billowing from an array of monster smoke machines. From two towers of PA's the first bars of kiss the carpet blistered forth and drenched the venue in a venomous warp of sound. Sitting there with the beat thumping and echoing in my rib cage & the gooseflesh texturing my skin, I thought, yes ! this is going to be good, the boy's sound has come a long way from the previous time I saw them play. This could actually be a real sisters gig of the early eighties. Dramatic entrance stage left of the new singer garbed in the classic black raincoat hat & shades, double grasp on the mike & croones "well she got red eyes" into the mike. The girlies start dancing in front of the stage & a rapturous expression settles into place on my countenance. As the night wore on I became more & more impressed, the new singer does an impressive impersonation of Von live. I can't remember the whole setlist, as I was somewhat besoffen but suffice to say all the favourites were played. I paticularly enjoyed the renditions of Gimme Gimme Gimme & Jolene, very well done, even I was tempted to the floor to move my body around in an approximation of dancing. Any of you who have not seen this band play, if you get the chance to go to one of their gig's , do so, you will not be dissapointed.
I have been a fan of The Sisters of Mercy since they started & IMHO The Sisters of Murphy are a fitting tribute band, if you can't have the genuine article, this is the next best thing.
Thanks Guys for a great evenings entertainment for an ageing sisters fan..
