The Gas Cub - (June 30th 2001)

The Sisters Of Murphy / Liquidhead / Violent Design.

Wasn't too sure about going to this gig, the diversity of the three bands here is a bit odd. Here you have a mixture of out-and-out metal, punk and of course, Goth. Looking around I didn't see too many goth-looking folks but then again, it is summertime! The first band on was VIOLENT DESIGN. I got a copy of their CD and I was waiting to see what they were like live. Fucking hell, they are intense! Their sound was bonecrushingly heavy and the drums were totally overpowering, the fact that such a diverse selection of music on offer here tonight brought a crowd of wrinkly rockers who just nodded their heads for the first few songs (note: I spotted one guy wearing a Tigertailz t-shirt!).
Onto Leeds punk mob LIQUID HEAD, you could instantly tell that whoever was operating their lights had worked with them before for a start! It has to be said they were good, not really MY bag but I have to admit for what they did i really enjoyed their set, they should be comedians!
It got to about 11pm and the 'Smurphs' went onstage, presuming a typical Sisters Tribute Band I have to say they WERE as good as watching the whole thing, infact bollocks - they were better. One minute they played modern Sisters stuff and the crowd disappeared, then the older stuff came back and they came back. This seemed to go on and on for ages and it was hilarious to watch, I felt exhausted after the SECOND ENCORE (getting their money's worth).
The gig was fun, but it's a shame that my new faves Violent Design couldn't get a mosh pit going, they're seriously more capable of bigger and better things than both the other two bands - mark my words, if they work for it, they'll get it.
